Frustrating game all round.
Shite team fighting to stay in the division, who just watched their mates foot spin round like the bird's head in the exorcist, playing a team coming down from a midweek high with the league's least natural finisher up front.
Crowd seemed to be uninterested, and in my area lot of the regulars had binned the game off.
Just seemed like the usual low tempo out of ideas performance we put in against anyone other than the top or euro teams.
I thought it was a shame that Johnson seemed to hold back most of the game when wide open, but it must have been clearly called out to target their right back as everything went down the left.
Still in with a good shout for a Euro place next season so still on track.

Looks like anything better than7th place finish will be a bonus. Win the Europa and none of us will care but things could have been different if we had brought in a couple of players in january. Still can't believe we couldn't scout someone in the time from summer to jan transfer window.

Luckily the wind wasn’t swirling around the bowl or those sails that look like pork chops on the side of his head would have screwed him into the ground like an auger

I thought the Westwood injury took about 7 mins with another couple for the crowd stoppages.
Pope wasted about 3 mins with goal kicks so with general other stoppages we should have played about 12 mins in the first half.
3 was the bare minimum in the second half

Yes, the perfect Antonio goal is an instinctive finish like the home game v Leicester or getting his leg in front of Harry Kane in the Tottenham home game.
When Bowen played him in at the end how many thought he had the technique to finish?
Lack of technique showed in the first half when a ball came to him on the edge of the area. Technique is to open your foot or wrap your foot around it to put it in either corner. His stiff ankle hit the ball about 10 yds wide of the right hand post.

Even though the game was stopped for ten minutes, the Newcastle v Leicester game still finished after ours.

Does anyone know why there was only nine minutes of injury time in the first half? Usually there is at least one minute, so you would have expected at least eleven really.

Then only three minutes in the second half? Seems to me that we were not given enough time. Not that we would have scored, and there is a chance that they could have scored, but we were definitely the more likely winners.

Side
If Rangers level is so poor how come they are in the same position as us ,EL semi final.?
They still had to beat Celtic and their mentatlity is relative to who they are playing. We often draw or lose at home against these 3rd FA Cup teams. Your argument is deeply flawed.

Don't much care about January. It's a shit time to buy players and you're far more likely to get a hugill than a lingard... even then, it seems to have been banished from memory that lingard did a passable impression of the invisible man in our last 6 games last season, many pf which were against packed defences, when we stood 4th in the league with 6 games left.

Truth is we've dropped silly points at home all season because we aren't really good enough to break these teams down.

As sven says, the recruiters need to get it right now. Last summers recruitment was awful and it's cost us hugely. And if benrahma isn't trusted to start yesterdayto freshen things up, and let bowen play up top to give antonio a rest (not hard to figure whether Burnleys shit kickers would prefer to be dealing with balls in behind or long straight balls and crosses) then we can start to question the recruitment further back than just last summer as well.

Moyes has done an unbelievable job, but his failure to freshen things up when there's a few that need to be taken out of the side hasn't been great.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Burnley - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
I agree that we have conceded some very scrappy weak goals, but think that the defence panics a bit due to the consequences of not finishing at the other end. I think we make enough chances ( most games ) to beat most teams but poor, poor finishing or decisions of whether your team mate has a better opportunity blights us.
Antonio although our leading goal scorer isn’t the answer, he’s going to be loved because of his effort ( like Carlton ), and does his job as well as can be expected of someone playing out of position as a makeshift striker, but I feel that unless it’s a reactionary opportunity at goal his mind is the weak spot. Most times he’s running towards goal with the ball and he has time to think, either poor technique or decisions make that chance come to nothing, or give the ball back to the opponent’s. After a number of games like that i.e. since the new year it must demoralise our midfield into thinking that our potential attacks could just as easily be an attacking opportunity for the opponent and as such makes the midfield look slow, which I don’t think it overly is, it’s just not as urgent to support, or more ready to have to possibly defend quickly. Bowen is doing brilliantly, and reaping the rewards of getting forward, but fuck me , he works like a slave.
Certain things Antonio is really good at, and other things not, same could be said of Haller albeit with the shit French attitude not helping anything or anyone.

Could imagine most of the chances we create, with our style of play being buried by a Lukaku or Ivan Toney, or even the fully fit and ( unbreakable) Carroll.

Least we have some games.comi g up where that counter attacking strength will come in handy.

The Brighton on the last day will haunt us...

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Burnley - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
Burnley started well for the first 5-10 mins then we took over but it was the story of not turning that into goals.
Burnley had two chances ... the goal came from allowing two headers from the corner with Fabianski getting himself trapped behind the striker and not being strong enough. The pen came from allowing Cornet to run from 2 yds inside his own half with no challenge.
Pope was MOTM with some great saves especially the low one from Diop's header but we had enough chances where he shouldnt have been given a chance.
Bowen is probably our best finisher and players like Antonio & Benrahma lack natural finishing ability.

Thought the bloke on motd2 summed us up perfectly we're an excellent counter attacking team but struggle to break down sides when we have a lot of possession

It was blindingly obvious that not strengthening in January would cost us.

And now here we are.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Burnley - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
To be fair I thought the first and last 20 mins we played some good stuff, can't agree on the post below saying we were slow. Thought we were going down the sides pretty fluently with players overlapping, and Declan through the middle, even Lanzini a little. Was just the usual story of not finishing things off.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Burnley - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
Having possession is the first part. Turning possession into a good scoring opportunity is the challenge that every team needs to unlock. We find that hard against a packed defence. But, to be fair, so do most.

Our real problem is conceding scrappy goals.

Sven Roeder 11:15 Mon Apr 18
Re: ⚽ West Ham v Burnley - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
We had more than enough chances to score 4 as we did at home to Brentford. Piss poor finishing summed up by Antonio's one on one at the end. A proper striker should be putting that away 9 out of 10.
Some of the other homes like Leeds and Southampton it was some poor defending conceding 3.
We have lots to work on for next season & the star recruiter from Man City needs to earn his CORN.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Burnley - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
Burnley, like so many other struggling teams we have faced this season, were there for the taking. We know we are good on the counter attack - we can do that all day. But can someone explain why we so static and clueless in possession?

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Burnley - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
Wheels have been slowly grinding to a halt since the turn of the year unfortunately.

Combination of the impact of European games and getting sussed out by sides below us (if recall correctly we won high 90% of games against teams bellow us last year) IMO.

Can’t help but feel some quality additions in January would be worth a few points by now, were the players we wanted out there? Not sure, no doubt some players were but I can understand the hesitancy of having players who aren’t going to deliver long term for the squad - I see both sides.

Looks like we’ll finish at least in the top 8, having been in the conversation for European places until April… coupled with at least a semi final in the EL and I think most would’ve taken that before a ball was kicked?

You never know with this squad, wouldn’t be surprised if we picked up points against Chelsea and Arsenal (hopefully wedged between getting to the final!)

Ultimately I think we’ll rue missed opportunities at home to the likes of Brentford, Newcastle, Southampton, Burnley etc. Even that penalty miss against United!

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Burnley - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
The whole midfield are just so slow. every chance of a quick counter is meet with Lanzini, Fornals, or Vaslic slowing things down, and passing back. All very safe play!!! Has Noble been having a word with them?? All just so slow!!

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Burnley - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
Yep Fabianski was at fault for the pen.
Didn't even try to win the ball or stay on his feet, narrow the angle and save the shot, just rushed out and took out the attacker.

How many goals has our only striker scored all season.
What is it 8?

As I said these are the games like Brentford too when we look back at the end of the season after narrowly missing out on Europe, that cost us.

Only ourselves to blame for showing zero ambition in January and zero common sense.
